The Costa Tropical of Granada enjoys more than 320 sunny days a year, making it one of the most privileged nautical destinations in Europe. But not all months are equal for sailing. If you want to make the most of your boat hire in Nerja or Marina del Este, it’s worth knowing when the sea, wind and weather combine to give you the perfect experience.
Peak season: July and August
The summer months are the most popular for good reason: the sea is calm, the sun beats down strongly and water temperatures hover around 24–26 ºC. It’s the ideal time for swimming in coves, snorkelling and enjoying long days on the water. The downside is heavier tourist numbers, meaning the most popular coves can be busier and it’s wise to book well in advance. Even so, with your own boat you can move away from crowded areas and find your own peaceful spot.
The hidden gem months: May, June and September
If you have flexibility with dates, these three months are our star recommendation. The weather is excellent, the sea is in perfect condition and the Costa Tropical is far less crowded. In June the water has already reached comfortable temperatures (20–22 ºC) and the days are the longest of the year. September is perhaps the most well-rounded month: the water is warmer than in July (the sea takes time to cool down), there are fewer tourists and prices are more accessible. In May the coves are practically deserted and the subtropical coastal vegetation is at its most lush.
Low season: October and early spring
October remains an excellent option for sailing. Temperatures hover around 22–25 ºC on land and the sea retains the heat accumulated during summer. It’s the preferred season for experienced sailors seeking tranquillity. From November conditions become more variable, with more windy days and chance of rain, although the Costa Tropical has notably mild winters compared to the rest of Spain.
