The Nerja Caves: a brief history
Discovered in 1959 by a group of young people from Nerja, the caves preserve cave paintings more than 40,000 years old, making them one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in Europe. The Great Cascade, the main column, stands 32 metres tall and is recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest stalactite. The caves also house a natural concert hall with exceptional acoustics, home to the famous Nerja Music and Dance Festival every July.
The boat route: from Marina del Este to Nerja
Setting off from Marina del Este, the crossing to Nerja takes approximately 1 hour sailing eastward along the coast. The journey is spectacular: you’ll pass in front of the cliffs of the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park, spotting the most pristine coves on the Costa Tropical before nearing Nerja. The sea caves near Nerja

These caves, carved by the sea over thousands of years in the limestone rock, have a dimension different from the famous land caves: here sunlight penetrates through the entrance creating blue reflections on the water inside.
